Quammen has been collecting ghost stories and visiting haunted places around the nation. Her journey took her to the remains of a uranium mining community in Colorado, to the country’s oldest military fort in Florida, and into the forests of Arkansas. But it was a personal encounter with a ghost that got her started, out here in the west, at the home of Mary and Ernest Hemingway. What she learned was this: The haunted parts of the land have important stories to tell about what troubles America today. Betsy Quammen joins us to talk about how the ghosts of the past can help defend against the rewriting of important history.
