A Conversation with Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson

After the 2020 election, Utah Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson opposed Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the results. It made her a target. The threats were serious enough that the state put her under protection for more than two years. Today, she describes herself as a “heretic” in her own party.

This election season, not much has changed, except that this time the pressure is also coming from the federal government. Henderson refused to hand over Utahns’ private voter data to the Trump administration. The Justice Department sued her, warned of criminal prosecution and told her she was under investigation. Last week a federal judge tossed the lawsuit, and the department says it will appeal. Henderson has also been a staunch defender of Utah’s vote-by-mail system, another target of the president. Now the DOJ is sending election monitors to Utah ahead of the midterms. Henderson says her office is prepared, and that Utahns should feel confident their votes will be counted correctly come Nov. 3.

Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson joins us to talk about the election, Utah’s voting system, her own political evolution and how she’s bearing up under all the pressure.
