The Alien Abduction of Betty and Barney Hill

Tamarra Kemsley
/
Matthew Bowman

On September 19, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill claimed they were abducted by “beings that were somehow not human.”

Betty and Barney were an interracial couple of the 60’s — Barney a postal worker, Betty a social worker. Both were also Unitarians, supporters of liberal politics and active in the civil rights movement. But after their story was repeatedly dismissed, they lost belief in the change they were working toward. In a biography of the famous couple, but also a lens into American life today, our guest, author Matthew Bowman, tells their story in his book “The Abduction of Betty and Barney Hill: Alien Encounters, Civil Rights and the New Age in America.”

GUEST:

Matthew Bowman | Assistant professor of religion and history, and the Howard W. Hunter Chair of Mormon Studies at Claremont Graduate University. His latest book is “The Abduction of Betty and Barney Hill: Alien Encounters, Civil Rights and the New Age in America” (Yale University Press |Amazon | Bookshop).
