On the Many Meanings of Twins

Author photo: Stephanie Black

Twins have captivated the human mind since ancient times. But often what’s imagined of them reveals more about everyone else than it does about real twin life.

The health researcher William Viney is a twin himself, and the author of a new book called “Twinkind.” It’s a literary and visual exploration of twins — and every shred of meaning we’ve assigned to them: we’ve revered them as gods in Artemis and Apollo, been terrified of them in films like “The Shining” and studied them almost endlessly. As the author’s own brother observes in the book’s introduction, “twins are also figures of promise and futurity.” Join us for a conversation about the many, many ways we’ve conceived the lives of twins — and what twins themselves have to say about their experiences.
