2021 storming of the United States Capitol

In the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, John Williams, a wilderness survival trainer from Utah, embarked on a dangerous mission to infiltrate American militias. Posing as an ally, Williams spent years undercover within groups like the Oath Keepers.

His work exposed alarming connections between militia leaders and high-ranking law enforcement officials, including a sheriff from Iron County. Williams also uncovered secret operations, like the surveillance of a student journalist at Southern Utah University. Williams's efforts provided a rare glimpse into the strategies and influence of these extremist groups. His undercover operation culminated in a massive trove of documents sent to ProPublica reporter Joshua Kaplan. Kaplan joins us to talk about the inner workings of these militias.
