That new approach has to do with something called pluralism. It’s the brainchild of a Harvard scholar that’s meant support to students of all backgrounds, minus the identity politics and the division that D.E.I. critics have pointed to. The University of Utah has embraced this framework, and the changes on campus are coming fast. But pluralism comes at a tricky time, when many universities are under attack from the Trump administration. That’s left supporters of the idea worried that pluralism just looks like capitulating to the White House, or simply like D.E.I. by a new name. The journalist Emma Green is joining us to talk about what she saw during her visit to the University of Utah.
